Myth #1: Rodenticide Makes Rodents Go Outside Looking for Water
This is probably the most common misconception surrounding rodent control.
Many people have been told that after a rat or mouse eats rodenticide, it becomes thirsty, leaves the structure in search of water, and dies outdoors.
While that sounds appealing, there is no evidence that modern rodenticides consistently work this way.
Every rodent behaves differently. Where it ultimately dies depends on many factors, including:
- Where it nested
- Where it found food
- How far it traveled before consuming bait
- The layout of the structure
- Environmental conditions
Some rodents may die outdoors.
Some may die inside an attic.
Others may die inside wall voids, crawl spaces, garages, or other inaccessible areas.
Unfortunately, no one can accurately predict where an individual rodent will die after consuming a rodenticide.
Myth #2: Rodenticides Mummify Rodents
Another claim occasionally made is that certain rodenticides somehow dry rodents out or “mummify” them so they never produce an odor.
Throughout my career, I’ve seen products advertised with claims suggesting they reduce or eliminate odor by drying out dead rodents. I’ve also tested several of these products myself.
Based on my personal field experience over the past 36 years, I have not found a product that consistently performs this way.
That doesn’t necessarily mean every product advertised is ineffective. However, I have not personally seen reliable documentation or consistent real-world results showing that a rodenticide can guarantee a rodent will naturally mummify and never produce an odor after dying inside a structure.
When a rodent dies inside a wall, attic, crawl space, or other inaccessible location, decomposition is a natural biological process. Whenever that happens, there is always the possibility of an unpleasant odor.
Can Exterior Rodenticide Still Result in Indoor Odors?
The answer is yes—it can happen.
At Cardinal Pest Management, we often recommend tamper-resistant exterior bait stations because they help reduce rodent populations around the outside of a structure before rodents gain access indoors.
However, even when bait is placed outside, a rodent may consume it and then return to its nesting area inside the home before it dies.
From my experience, this tends to happen far less often than when rodenticides are placed directly inside attics, wall voids, or crawl spaces where rodents are already living.
Even so, it remains a possibility that homeowners should understand before any rodenticide program begins.
