The Real Problem Isn’t the Rodent—It’s the Entry Point
Many pest problems begin with surprisingly small openings around a structure. Rodent entry points can range from flaws in construction to forced chewed entry.
Common rodent entry points include:

Why We Prefer One-Way Exit Devices
One-way exit devices are designed to allow rodents and nuisance wildlife to leave the structure—but not return.
The process begins with a thorough inspection to locate every potential entry point. Most of these openings are permanently sealed first.
The primary active entry point is intentionally left open long enough for a one-way exit device to be installed.
As the animals leave to search for food or water, they pass through the device normally. When they attempt to return, the device prevents re-entry.
Once activity has stopped and we’re confident the structure has been vacated, the one-way device is removed and that final opening is permanently sealed.
When performed correctly, this approach can eliminate an entire infestation without relying solely on traps.

How One-Way Exit Devices Work
Several styles of one-way exits are available depending on the animal and the structure.
Spring-Door Exit Devices
These use a lightweight spring-loaded door that swings open as the animal exits. Once it passes through, gravity or spring tension closes the door behind it. The animal can push its way out—but cannot push back in.
Flexible Finger or Spine Devices
Another common design uses flexible “prickly” fingers or spines. As the rodent exits, the spines bend easily in the direction of travel. When the animal attempts to re-enter, the spines press against its face and body, making re-entry uncomfortable enough that it abandons the attempt.
When all other entry points have already been sealed, the rodent eventually gives up looking for another way inside.
This exclusion method has been part of our nuisance wildlife control arsenal for over 30 years and has proven to be one of the most effective long-term solutions available.
Why Not Just Trap Everything?
Traditional trapping certainly has its place, and in some severe infestations it remains an important part of the control program.
However, trapping alone has several disadvantages.
If the entry points remain open:
- New rodents continue entering.
- Trap inspections and resets become ongoing.
- Homeowners continue hearing activity.
- The infestation often returns.
Exclusion solves the source of the problem instead of continually treating the symptoms.
Georgia’s Live Trapping Requirements
When dealing with squirrels, it’s important to understand that Georgia regulations require live traps used for squirrels to be checked at least once every 24 hours by the company or individual responsible for setting the trap.
For homeowners, this can translate into repeated inspection visits that increase the overall cost of the job—sometimes significantly—before the exclusion work even begins.
In many situations, professionally installed one-way exit devices can reduce the need for repeated live-trap inspections while still allowing the animals to leave the structure naturally. The best approach depends on the species involved, the structure, and applicable regulations.
What About Rodenticide?
Rodenticide remains an important tool—but where it is used matters.
At Cardinal Pest Management, we generally prefer using tamper-resistant exterior bait stations as part of an integrated rodent management program.
Outdoor baiting helps reduce rodent populations before they enter the structure while keeping bait secured in locked stations.
Many customers ask:
“Can a rodent eat bait outside and still die inside my house?”
The answer is yes—it is still possible.
A rodent may consume bait outdoors and later travel back inside before it dies. However, based on our field experience, this occurs far less often than placing rodenticides directly inside attics, walls, or crawl spaces where rodents are already living.
Using exterior bait stations as part of an integrated program helps lower rodent pressure around the property while reducing the chances of unpleasant odors caused by rodents dying within living spaces.
