Bed Bugs – The Ultimate Hitchhiker

When most people hear the term hitchhiking insect, bed bugs immediately come to mind.

Unlike fleas, bed bugs don’t jump.

Unlike ants, they don’t build trails.

Instead, they quietly crawl into places where people unknowingly transport them.

Common ways bed bugs spread include:

They don’t fly.

Instead, they spread through direct contact and by sharing personal items.

Sharing hats

Sharing helmets
Sharing headphones
Hanging jackets beside other jackets
Sharing pillows
Resting your head where someone with lice recently rested theirs

Fleas Can Hitchhike Too

Fleas are best known for riding on dogs, cats, wildlife, and rodents.

However, fleas can occasionally hitchhike on clothing.

For example, someone walking through a heavily infested home or yard may unknowingly carry one or more fleas on their clothing before those fleas jump off at another location.

Fortunately, fleas generally don’t remain on clothing nearly as long as bed bugs or lice.

Their preferred hosts are animals.

Still, transporting fleas on clothing is possible, especially when a home has a significant flea infestation.

Used Furniture Isn’t Always a Bargain

Buying second-hand furniture can save money…

But it can also introduce unwanted pests into your home.

Before bringing used furniture inside, inspect it carefully for:

Bed bugs
German cockroaches
Cockroach egg capsules
Rodent droppings
Insect staining
Shed insect skins

The same advice applies to used electronics, especially kitchen appliances.

Warm motors and enclosed spaces make excellent hiding places for German cockroaches.

Prevention Is Your Best Defense

You can’t eliminate every risk, but you can greatly reduce the chances of bringing hitchhiking insects home.

Inspect used furniture carefully.
Avoid bringing discarded mattresses home.
Examine used appliances before purchasing.
Wash second-hand clothing before wearing it.
Inspect hotel rooms when traveling.
Keep luggage off beds and upholstered furniture.
Vacuum luggage after returning from trips.
Watch for signs of bed bugs after overnight travel.
Inspect moving boxes before bringing them indoors.

Ticks – Nature’s Patient Hitchhikers

Ticks are another excellent example of hitchhiking pests. Unlike fleas, they don’t jump, and unlike bed bugs, they don’t hide in furniture waiting for a ride. Instead, ticks use a behavior called “questing,” where they climb onto tall grass, weeds, shrubs, or low-hanging branches and wait with their front legs extended until a person or animal brushes past. Once contact is made, the tick quickly grabs onto clothing, shoes, socks, or a pet’s fur and begins crawling in search of a suitable place to attach and feed. Many people pick up ticks while hiking, hunting, camping, fishing, mowing the lawn, gardening, or simply walking through overgrown vegetation. Pets can also carry ticks into the home after spending time outdoors. Although ticks usually don’t remain on clothing as long as bed bugs or lice, they can hitchhike long enough to be transported from one location to another before attaching to a person or animal. Because ticks can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and several other tick-borne illnesses, it’s important to perform a thorough tick check after spending time outdoors. Wearing long pants tucked into socks, using EPA-registered tick repellents, staying on maintained trails, and inspecting clothing and pets before entering your home can greatly reduce the chances of bringing these unwanted hitchhikers indoors.
